More about Helsinki

Helsinki is an excellent city to visit in the summertime. The days are bright and, at the end of August, the temperature can still rise up to 20 degrees Celsius. Various events are held in Helsinki during the summer. At the end of August, for example, urban festival Art Goes Kapakka occupies the city’s pubs and bars with a vast range of art and culture, all of which is free of charge: art, theatre, poetry, dance and music – not to mention culinary delights.

Helsinki’s proximity to the sea offers an endless number of opportunities in the summer. Helsinki’s shoreline is adorned by around 100 kilometres of coast and over 300 islands of which many are accessible for recreational use. A popular attraction to visit in Helsinki is Suomenlinna, one of the world’s largest maritime fortresses and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other important tourist attractions are the rock church Temppelinaukio, Finnish National Gallery Ateneum, the Sibelius monument, the museum of contemporary art Kiasma, and the Finnish National Opera.

Helsinki’s identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and West. Over 450 years of history, several architectural layers and the impact of different periods can be discovered in Helsinki. Finnish design has also made the country’s capital world famous. The beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with hight-tech achievements, while old traditions mix with the lates contemporary trends. The city centre has many beautiful parks, and the nearby forests offer an ideal setting for peaceful and quiet walks.
